MARICELA CAÑEDO CASTRO Paipai Basketweaver

Maricela weaves coiled baskets. She uses piñon pine needle sewn with fan palm. Maricela also makes willow bark skirts, coiled pit-fired pottery, fiber sandals and net bags. Maricela is the grand-daughter of Teresa Castro. She is fluent in Paipai and is being raised by her grandmother.

Maricela lives in the Kumeyaay Paipai community of Santa Catarina, Baja California.

This California Indian artist's work may be purchased at Shumup Ko Hup Indian store in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park.
